Özet

Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) are widely used for IoT applications due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of implementation. However, they introduce new challenges, such as limited energy resources, ensuring quality of service and quality of experience, and managing large volumes of multimedia data transmission. This paper proposes a novel approach to address these issues by integrating a NoSQL-based main memory database into sensor network nodes. The approach involves storing and processing data at the edges and only transmitting it to the server upon request, thus optimizing energy consumption and potentially enhancing the quality of experience by providing processed and stored data instead of raw data. Three alternative scenarios are considered to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. In the first scenario, raw data is transmitted directly to the server for processing and analysis. In the second approach, data is processed locally at the edge, with only the results being sent to the server. In the third scenario, data is also processed at the edge, but the results are stored in the edge data storage database instead of being transmitted. The server receives the answer only when a request is made. The study used both a real testbed and a simulator to test these scenarios. The results indicate that the proposed solution significantly reduces energy consumption and the server’s request rate, effectively addressing the challenges posed by WMSNs. The proposed approach of integrating a NoSQL-based main memory database into sensor network nodes helps to reduce transmission costs, optimize energy consumption, and potentially improve the quality of experience in resource-constrained environments. By storing and processing data at the edge, the proposed approach reduces the need for frequent communication with the server and optimizes energy usage.
